Dr. Martin Lurther King Jr. Park

Dr. Martin Lurther King Jr. ParkDr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and Park is located at the intersection of East California and South Owens. Named after the greatest civil rights leader this nation has ever seen, this community center and park is dedicated to meeting the needs of the neighborhood!

The large multipurpose room has plenty of room for large family, or organizational functions. You can hold reunions, corporate meetings, or a multitude of other functions within this facility. In addition to the room spaces, there is a kitchen to prepare food in, and to serve from. There are also two group picnic areas and a serving shelter available outside. To ensure you get the space you need, when needed, please be sure to make your reservations as early as possible for this popular community center.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and Park has an after school program for neighborhood children. This program offers assistance in doing homework, and has other after school activities directed toward keeping the children in a safe environment until their parents return home, and helping them to learn and grow while attending. When summer arrives “Camp King” is available for neighborhood children. This program is a full day, or half-day, day camp. Like the after school program, “Camp King” is geared toward giving the children an alternative to staying home alone while their parents work. It is a safe alternative for our future generations!

During the school year, many low-income children, from all areas, are dependent on the school lunch program to eat at least one well balanced meal a day, at little to no cost. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and Park offers a free lunch program during the summer months. This program is available for all low-income children, under the age of eighteen, and is available Monday through Friday. If the child is accompanied by a parent, or sibling, or other person, over eighteen, there is a nominal fee for the adult. The prices change every year, and you can call 326-FUNN for more information on this program.

Do you enjoy swimming? Would you like your child to learn to swim? During the summer months, the pool at this park offers swimming lessons, before and after recreational swimming. These lessons are well worth the investment! It allows your children, or even adults, to learn to be comfortable in water and build their strength and skills and gives them the confidence needed to save their life if they get into a tough situation in a body of water. The pool usually opens after school ends for the year, and remains open until the last weekend before school begins. So whether you are coming to learn to swim, or are coming just to cool off with friends and family, you are always welcome to our pool!

Beginning approximately May of every year, and ending mid to late October, we have a spray park located next to the pool. This spray park offers hours of enjoyment to all who care to play. It is a free, fun, safe way to cool off during the hot months of summer and fall. Come and visit the spray park, we are sure you will enjoy it!

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and Park also offers a full gym. Inside, regardless of the weather outside, you can enjoy rousing games of basketball, or you can exercise with our equipment. Of course, there are also lighted basketball and tennis courts outside for your use, too.

Come and see for yourself this wonderful community center and park. We are sure you will recommend it to your family and friends once you have experienced all of the amenities of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and Park!
