City of Bakersfield Park
In 1917, Jastro Park was built on land donated to the City of Bakersfield by the Kern County Land
Company, which was managed by, and the park named for, Mr. Henry Jastro. Mr. Jastro then donated the bandstand, which has been used for many years by bands, weddings, and for other family entertainment.
This park has been in continuous use for over eighty years, and the only sign of its age is the shade canopy, which can be enjoyed by all in the sultry heat of summer. Located between Truxtun and 18th Street, just east of Oak Street, and surrounded by a quaint neighborhood, Jastro Park offers a great variety of entertainment for all members of the family. The shade comes in handy when planning a family birthday party or other large event. Two picnic areas are available for rent, with one offering a serving shelter. All will enjoy any party given in this beautiful and centrally located park.
For the tennis enthusiasts there are seven tennis courts, complete with lighting for those short winter and spring days. The courts are open to the public during normal park hours and have been enjoyed by many over the years.
Basketball, volleyball, and horseshoes are a few other sports offered to the public at this park. The basketball court also has lighting for use after sundown. The horseshoe pits have been used in official competition, and are a real challenge for serious horseshoe players.
Jastro Park also offers a spray park available from April or May until October. This is a free and fun way to cool off during our hot summers. Come by and enjoy a splash or two with your children, you will be glad you did.
If your children like to play on sandlot style toys, this park offers a great collection. These toys range from a “tot lot” sized area to a larger children’s area. There are toys to swing on; toys to climb on; toys to crawl through; and toys to slide down. It is guaranteed your child will find a favorite toy in this area!
Come and enjoy one of the more established parks in Bakersfield, all are always welcome to beautiful Jastro Park.
