Operations>Bomb Squad Unit
The Bakersfield Police Department Bomb Squad Officers are known as Bomb Technician’s or Hazardous Devices technicians and obtain this distinction upon successful completion of the six week long Hazardous Devices School conducted by the U.S. Army and the F.B.I. at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.
The Bomb Squad is responsible for responding to all suspicious devices, commercial and military explosive related calls, in addition to the investigation of explosive related incidents that occur within the City of Bakersfield limits. The Bomb Squad also provides training on bomb and bombing related incidents to police officers, police trainees, citizen groups and businesses. The Bomb Squad provides expertise to the various tactical units within the Police Department along with assisting the public and other government entities with vulnerability assessments and dignitary protection.
Each certified member of the Bomb Squad is equipped with a bomb suit and other personal protective gear and an assortment of specialized tools to accomplish their task. Nearly all of the equipment utilized by the Bomb Squad has been provided to the Police Department via federal grants.
In addition to the individual equipment, the squad possesses two robots, x-ray equipment and specialized equipment for the response to chemical, biological and nuclear related incidents.
