The program will teach teamwork, leadership skills and camaraderie. BFD Explorers work side by side with professional Bakersfield City Firefighters to help carry out the : Bakersfield Fire Department Mission.

Certified BFD Explorers may respond with BFD fire companies during routine and emergency activities, but are prohibited from involvement in hazardous situations or any direct fire suppression activities. To become a Certified BFD Explorer, candidates must complete an extensive check-off list which encompasses many of the duties that may be expected of them.
In addition to learning about the Fire Service, the BFD Explorer program motivates young adults to have a sense of responsibility for their neighborhoods through on-going community related activities.
