What is Fair Housing?
Federal and State laws prohibit housing discrimination based on a person's race, color, religion, disability, national origin, gender, familial status, age, marital status, sexual orientation, and other illegal forms of discrimination. Fair Housing laws protect all housing consumers from discrimination with respect to rental, sales, lending, and insurance transactions.

How does the Fair Housing Program serve Bakersfield residents?
The City of Bakersfield's Fair Housing Program provides community outreach and education to all residents, technical training for housing providers, enforcement activities, and counseling services for consumers and housing providers.

How does the Fair Housing Program resolve housing discrimination complaints?
The Fair Housing Program records and screens housing discrimination complaints, conducts investigations, makes determinations based on investigations, assists consumers and providers to mediate complaints, prepares settlement agreements, and cooperates with federal and state agencies to ensure adherence to fair housing laws.

What are some examples of prohibited acts under fair housing laws?
The following are some prohibited actions when based on illegal discrimination:
▪Refusing to negotiate for housing
▪Insisting that you live in the "family area"
▪Denying services available to others
▪Allowing unlawful bias to affect property appraisal
▪Refusing to allow reasonable accommodation for an assistive aide, assistive animal, or parking
▪Refusing to allow a reasonable modification due to a disability
