Commonly Asked Questions with the Adoption of 2010 Building Code

  1. Question: When will the codes be in effect and how will it be apply to my project?

  2. Answer: The codes will be effective on January 1, 2011.  They will apply to any new projects submitted after January 1, 2011.  Complete construction documents (i.e., architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and complete energy/structural calculations) submitted on or before December 31, 2010 will be plan checked and inspected abased on 2007 California Codes.   Plan Check and permits may not be granted extension of time without plan modifications after January 1, 2011.
  1. Question: How will the code apply to existing commercial buildings?
  2. Answer: There are number of variables that will have to be evaluated (i.e., existing and proposed: fire sprinklers, use and occupancy).  There are significant differences between this code and previous codes.  We suggest that a meeting with one of the commercial plans examiners early in the project would be beneficial to us and the applicant especially for changes in use or additions.
  1. Questions:  Is the City making amendments to the state codes and where can I get a copy?
  2. Answer:  Yes, we are making some amendments to the code.  A draft copy is available on this website: Draft of Building Code Adoption/Amendment Ordinance or contact Chris Lee, Assistant Building Director (326-3790, cdlee@bakersfieldcity.us) for additional questions/information.
