A celebration was held 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. to showcase and encourage the community to visit the newly renovated park. Along with the City, collaborators of the event were the Arts Council of Kern (ACK), Bakersfield Museum of Art, Bakersfield Community House, Downtown Business Association (DBA), and Vision 2020.
Entertainment was provided by the Arts Council of Kern. Performances were made by the Bluegrass Jam, Bakersfield College Drum Line, and the Bako Irish Jam. Also, ACK sponsored “Arts in Action – Paint Me a Picture” which featured various artists painting in the park. Another sponsor, DBA along with Vision 2020, coordinated the Trolley Tours with the Gaslight Melodrama acting as tour guides.
The Bakersfield Museum of Art, a non-profit neighbor of Central Park, held “Dollar Day” with a family art project. The other one, Bakersfield Community House, held an open house with a food and bake sale.
The City contracted with the Village Artisans to coordinate the craft vendors. Also, the City had contracts with four food vendors. The Recreation Division coordinated the family games which included an obstacle course, water brigade, balloon toss, sync step, and 3-legged race.
The opening celebration was very successful with attendance over 1,200.
