The City of Bakersfield’s Animal Control unit is a department within the Bakersfield Police Department, Operations Division.
This unit handles animal related services and complaints for city residents. An average of 16,000 calls per year is handled by this unit citywide.
Field officers are available 7 days per week, between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm. Officers are available for emergency situations after 5 pm, 7 days a week.
The city Animal Control unit compliment is; #1 Supervisor, #1 Sr. Animal Control Officer, # 4 Animal Control Officers and #1 clerk.
This unit is responsible for ensuring public safety, reuniting pets with their owners, handling dangerous situations involving animals, cruelty cases and rescuing stray and injured animals.
The administrative office for field services is located at; City Hall South, 1501 Truxtun Ave, 2nd floor #339. You may also call the AC office at 661-326-3436.
Visitor parking for City Hall South is located on the South side of the building, parking limit is 2 hours. There is also parking available at the City of Bakersfield Parking Structure located at the corner of 18th and Eye Street and there is a 3 hr limit.
City Animal Control is responsible for enforcing ordinances within the city as well as the state of California mandates.
We respond and enforce all issues pertaining to dogs and a limited number of issues involving cats. We do not pick up contained cats; a leash law ordinance pertaining to cats does not currently exist within the city of Bakersfield.
We do not respond to calls for pests, birds or wildlife. You may refer to the “Resource” tab for more information.
